Near the nexus of Hillhurst Avenue and Sunset and Hollywood boulevards, Bishop Stephan Hoeller has presided since 1977 at Ecclesia Gnostica, the tiny, incense-infused chapel of the Gnostic Society. Gnosticism, an ancient form of Christianity that flourished in the 1st to 3rd centuries, rejects doctrines such as original sin and emphasizes transcendence through inward, intuitive knowledge (“gnosis”) of the divine spark in each individual. Condemned as heresy by early Roman Catholic authorities, gnosticism has drawn renewed interest in recent decades thanks in part to the writings of Carl Jung and religious scholar Elaine Pagels. Hoeller, 70, a Hungarian emigre whose parish extends to Portland and Salt Lake City, recently published “Gnosticism: New Light on the Ancient Tradition of Inner Knowing” (Quest Books).

Where exactly do mainstream Christians and Gnostics part ways?

Where it comes to what is considered salvific, or what saves. We don’t proselytize. There’s no belief that coming to us you’ll be immediately saved and by not coming to us that you’ll be lost. Gnosticism has often been described as “salvation through knowledge,” but Gnosis doesn’t mean knowledge of particular data. Rather, it’s an inner “knowingness,” a change of consciousness. Salvation through the death and suffering of Jesus is not part of our thought.

What is the place of Jesus in Gnostic tradition?

The Gnostics have held that there are always messengers of light who come from the inner worlds as archetypes of transformation, though many feel that Jesus was perhaps the latest and the greatest of these. However, you’ll have no difficulty finding experiences resembling gnosis within other religious contexts--the samadhi of the yogis, the nirvana of the Buddhists, satori within Zen Buddhism.

How would you explain the revived interest in gnostic thought?

I believe there are two reasons for this. The first is the so-called Nag Hammadi Library [1,500-year-old papyrus codices found in Egypt in 1945], the largest body of original Gnostic literature ever discovered. It was translated into English in the mid ‘70s, giving us a more accurate look than we’d had through hostile secondhand sources. This allowed people to see that gnosticism is really far less bizarre and marginal than has been assumed. The second issue is a certain harmony between this material and modern and postmodern thinking. Some of these convergences occur within the depth psychology of Carl Jung. I also believe we are beginning to find echoes of Gnostic philosophy within the study of chaos theory or the approach of deconstructive thinkers.

Is Los Angeles “Gnostic-friendly”?

When I came from Hungary, I had a kind of poetic intuition that the city was re-embodiment of the cultural and spiritual diversity of ancient Alexandria where the Gnostics, the Neo-Platonists and all these old boys were. America enjoys exceptional religious freedom, particularly among those who have migrated to the West Coast and no longer feel compelled to simply follow the faith of their parents.

Gnosticism was mentioned in some discussions of the 1997 Heaven’s Gate cultist suicides in Rancho Santa Fe. Can you comment on that?

People in the press and even some scholars jumped to the unjustified conclusion that because Gnostics feel earthly life is a relatively lowly condition, they are therefore disposed toward religiously motivated suicide. But nowhere in our tradition do we find any indication of this. We believe in overcoming the darkness, not plunging into it.

How does a Gnostic transcend worldly entanglements?

It’s sort of what our Buddhist friend Alan Watts called “the shifting of the psychological point of gravity.” Gnostics aren’t exhorted to embrace poverty or chastity or vegetarianism. We look inward, but don’t deny the outer world. We can smell the flowers--maybe even pick a few along the way. But we must keep walking.

Where does Gnosticism fall in with the New Age movement?

New Agers are very much “in denial” of the dark side, and the Gnostics not at all. We feel that we must recognize both dark and light.

Have you personally ever been called a heretic?

Not since my youth. When I’d have the occasional dispute with Catholic clergy and fellow students, I’d hear, “Ah, there goes Hoeller the heretic.” Even then it was rather jocular. Observations on the Influence of the Occult in Traditional Catholic Discourse

PUBLISHED ON 'MEDIUM' PLATFORM [which I will not re-blog in full, so please click the link to read. It is an 80 min. read]. I have added below some material found since my reading of the article, i.e., a screenshot from the Gnostic Society, and a response to the article from Dr. Chojnowski.

https://justacatholic.medium.com/observations-on-the-influence-of-the-occult-in-traditional-catholic-discourse-2d798e5ba51c

Dr. Chojnowski: I have had experience, over the years, with some of the men who are mentioned in this article. I have worked on books and articles of Charles Coulombe when I was helping out at Angelus Press. It was during those years that the stories about Coulombe's writings for Gnosis magazine first emerged. This caused a sensation at the time and caused the Angelus to distance itself from Mr. Coulombe, even though he had done excellent work on the topics of Christian Civilization, Monarchy, and the history of the Papacy. From what I remember, it was more his connections to Gnosis and not his Feeneyite beliefs nor his Monarchist politics that was at the center of the controversy. This was in the mid-90s, stretching to at least the year 2000. He has continued to contribute by his frequent interviews about the various traditionalist movements of the past and a more truly right-wing and traditionalist view of European history. How this fits in with reading Tarot cards, I do not understand, since I thought it was a sin worthy of damnation.

It was with Dr. Wolfgang Smith that I had a personal relationship. When I moved to Idaho from Kansas he was living here and going to the SSPX church in Post Falls. He admired some of the work that I had done for the Angelus, so he contacted me and we met. We had several personal meetings and lunches over the course of a few years. Dr. Smith had taken a truly heroic stance, as a scientist from MIT, against Scientism (the ideology that says that empirical science and its popular theories can and do explain all aspects of our existence), Evolution --- against which he has a number of books and magnificent articles, the Atheism prevalent in scientific circles, and against the apostasy inherent in Modernism, stemming from Kant and flowering in Teilhard de Chardin. His book against Teilhard is truly magnificent. In this context, he told me that, after being invited to many a prominent conference on the relationship between religion and science, he was suddenly cut out after he gave his book against Teilhard to an archbishop at one of these conferences. By the awkwardness of the moment, he understood that he would never be invited back. Dr. Smith must also be praised for his book on Quantum Mechanics and his beliefs that the traditional Aristotelian distinction between Act/Potency could be used to solve many of the philosophical problems inherent in this new physics.

I figured there was something going on, however, when Dr. Smith, soon to move to California with his now deceased wife, gave me boxes and boxes from his library having to do with the "crisis in the Church."  This was about 2003. He said that he was no longer interested in such questions since now he was interested more in "metaphysics." I did not realize fully at the time that there was a very fundamental change going on in his mind, a change that would end up producing a conversation, over the phone, in about 2005, at the end of which he said that "God seeds His revelation in all religions." Trying to put the best spin on his statement, I said that, "Yes, there can be found natural truths that are present in all religions, truths that have been discovered by men (e.g., that man has in immortal soul or that a Creator exists)." But this is not what he meant, as he quickly pointed out. It was that "God gives revelation to all traditional religions (e.g, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and, yes, the Roman Catholic religion)." He meant what he said and the conversation ended soon after. I was further shocked when I read one of the prefaces that he wrote for one of those books that he had given to me from his own library. It was the book by Jean Borella, entitled, The Secret of the Christian Way. In the preface to this book (viii), Dr. Smith writes, "Yet the contact with [Rene] Guenon and with the Oriental traditions must have provided a powerful stimulus --- a veritable imperative --- to deepen and universalize his understanding of the Catholic faith. It has thus prepared and empowered Borella to contribute effectively to the accomplishment of one of the major tasks confronting the Catholic Church today [2001], which is to bring her teaching --- timeless in its essence -- into harmony with all that is true and profound in the doctrines of the East [Oriential mysticism]. Only by bringing this task to completion, I believe, can the Church realize and manifest her own God-given universality --- her true "catholicity" --- and thus FULFILL HER DIVINELY APPOINTED MISSION." This, and the quotations from Dr. Smith found above in the article by Mr. McFadden, is a statement of apostasy and the flip side of Bergolian "left-wing" ecumenism and pantheism. It is very sad, but true.

GATES-OF-HELL ?

.

BILL GATES AND THE "LUCIFER TRUST."
IS THERE A CONNECTION?

Last week I wrote about Bill Gates’s connection to eugenics, Nazis, and white supremacy. Bill credits his father as the spiritual leader of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His father was “head of Planned Parenthood,” according to Bill, Jr, an organization whose founder, Margaret Sanger, called for using birth control and sterilization to eliminate “human waste” and “create a race of thoroughbreds.”
In her Birth Control Review she published Ernst Rudin, a close friend who was then serving as Hitler’s Director of Genetic Sterilization for the Nazis. As one contributor to Sanger’s Birth Control Review wrote: “It is the lower elements of the population, the negroid aboriginal tribes and the pariahs or outcasts, who are gaining the fastest.”  [1]
Bill Gates (right center) next to eugenicist Jeffrey Epstein (left center) from New York Times article, “Bill Gates met with Jeffrey Epstein many times, despite his past.” (Oct. 12, 2019). See also “Jeffrey Epstein Hoped to Seed Human Race With His DNA.” (NYTimes, July 31, 2019) and “Private jets, parties and eugenics: Jeffrey Epstein's bizarre world of scientists,” ( The Guardian , August 8, 2019).
Bill Gates (right center) next to eugenicist Jeffrey Epstein (left center) from New York Times article, “Bill Gates met with Jeffrey Epstein many times, despite his past.” (Oct. 12, 2019). Bill Gates champions the “magic of vaccines” and calls vaccines “something I love.” In my recent book, I document the Gates Foundation’s targeted efforts to depopulate Ethiopia and Africa. The book also verifies accusations by Kenya’s Catholic doctors association, the nation’s largest, of 3 million women there unknowingly receiving vaccinations from the Gates-funded World Health Organization that were secretly laced with a sterilant and contraceptive. The WHO denied it, but in 2017, the former prime minister of Kenya, Raila Odinga backed the doctors: “Today, we can confirm to the country that the Catholic Church was right.” [2]
Dr. Wahome Ngare was the lead doctor and chief whistleblower exposing the corrupt vaccines laced with sterilant injected into over 3 million unsuspecting Kenyan women. Doctor Ngare believes in vaccines, has administered them for decades, and vaccinates his own children.

Do I think Bill and Melinda are conspiring in back rooms to depopulate only darker races? I doubt it. (Well, Bill maybe.) Somebody is probably doing that, but my guess is that Bill and Melinda are admirable proponents of an ideology that believes they are helping the world. And when they run into facts that challenge their ideology, they do what many of us do at times. They block it out.
But somebody out there is cooking up evil. And how does one catch them? In my quest ten years ago to dig up more on Gates, I learned that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is a donor to the Lucis Trust (formerly the “Lucifer Trust” by some accounts—we will pursue that in a moment). Lucis Trust is headquartered at 866 United Nations Plaza and claims 6,000 members. The Lucis Trust website showed the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as a Financial Partner with a Lucis Trust subsidiary, the New Group of World Servers. The Lucis website says “Men of goodwill who co-operate form part of the New Group of World Servers which is working to implement the Plan.”
What is “the Plan”? They don’t say specifically but “ultimate world unity” is mentioned in the same paragraph. Also, we learn the following: “Behind these leaders and the co-operating men of goodwill are the Custodians of the Plan, ‘the inner spiritual Government of the Planet.’” Whatever the unity is, the web page makes a point to say “this kingdom is not a Christian kingdom” but rather “These are the people who are building the new world order.” They are also called “Enlightened Ones.” [3]

I’m sure Bill and Melinda were flattered. I’m also suspecting their 30 PR staffers got to work scrubbing the site. They are no longer listed as Financial Partners. In fact, the list does not exist. Neither does the article thanking “George Soros” and “Bill Gates” and saying “the money energy is beginning to flow into new channels.” You can’t even find it on the Wayback Machine, the archive of the internet. But even ten years ago, I had an inkling this documentation might disappear, so I took screenshots of all the information. The files are still in my possession. [4]
Are the Gates’ evil? Again, this is a difficult way to phrase the question. Is Planned Parenthood evil? Was Margaret Sanger evil, the eugenicist who founded the largest performer of abortions? For those who believe abortion is murder, who know it involves killing or dismembering a child in the womb, who detest the idea of population control based on class, ability, and genetic strength, the answer is a resounding Yes. Do the people running Planned Parenthood today think they are evil? No. And they dress nicely.
Bill and Melinda also dress well. And they seem to really believe their efforts are for the good. So do the leaders of the Lucis Trust, a cause Bill and Melinda Gates have financially supported, to the degree that Bill Gates and George Soros were singled out by Lucis as key donors. Let’s get to the bottom of this allegation that they were once called the “Lucifer Trust.”

The roots of the Lucis Trust trace back to a woman who is credited for inspiring Hitler’s obsession with the occult, the 19th century author and occultist Helena Blavatsky, who discipled the founder of Lucis Trust, Alice Bailey. Blavatsky was a Russian immigrant and self-proclaimed levitating psychic who founded the occult and spiritualist movement called Theosophy, which became wildly popular, especially in Germany. She is “widely considered the ‘mother’ of New Age spirituality as well as a touchstone in the development of Nazi paganism and the chief popularizer of the swastika as a mystical symbol,” writes Jonah Goldberg in National Review
“The occult revival in Germany and in Europe in general in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries led to a remarkable growth of Theosophic lodges as well as other occult groups,” writes author C. M. Vasey. He says there are “parallels between Blavatsky’s esoteric thought and Hitler’s racial ideology” and connects Blavatsky’s “Cyclopean eye” and the elevation of the Aryan race with themes later championed by Hitler.

Blavatsky hardly concealed the true focus of her occult leanings. In an 1885 book, she writes: “It is but natural . . . to view Satan, the Serpent of Genesis, as the real creator and benefactor, the Father of Spiritual mankind.” In another passage she extols “the ‘Harbinger of Light,’ bright radiant Lucifer,” who opened the eyes of Adam. [5]
Blavatsky’s Theosophy magazine was edited by Alice Bailey, who called the levitating admirer of Satan her mentor, dedicating one of her books to Blavatsky, “that great disciple who lighted her torch in the east and brought the light to Europe and America.” Bailey went on to found the Lucis Trust, and Blavatsky’s works are promoted on the Lucis Trust website. [6]
The Lucis website displays a great many of Bailey’s beliefs on their site. But certain Alice Bailey teachings listed on the site a few years ago are discoverable now only on the Wayback machine. In 2000, the site noted that Bailey and her followers at Lucis look for the “return of the ‘World Teacher,’ the Coming One Who will return to lead humanity into a new age and into a heightened consciousness.” In 1998, the website had another interesting sentence: “Today the reappearance of the World Teacher, the Christ, is expected by millions, not only by those of Christian faith but by those of every faith who expect the Avatar under other names -- the Lord Maitreya, Krishna, Messiah, Imam Mahdi and the Bodhisattva.”
So who do the Lucis people worship? Internet theories have for years claimed it is Lucifer. Longtime Lucis Trust president Sarah McKechnie discussed the problem of conspiracy theorists in a 2013 interview: “It’s only in more recent years with the internet and this sharing of ideas, no matter how cockamamie they might be, that the internet offers, that we hear more and more from people who are concerned about our name.”
On Good Friday Bill Gates’s Microsoft firm ran an ad featuring prominent satanist Marina Abramovic, who makes “art” out of blood, gore and cannibalism. She poses here with Jacob Rothschild, in front of Sir Thomas Lawrence’s 1797 painting “Satan Summoning His Legions.” In a promotional video posted on Microsoft’s official YouTube account, Abramovic is described as the “most legendary performance artist working now.” After 24,000 down votes, Microsoft pulled the ad. See here and here .

Elsewhere on the Lucis Site, McKechnie writes about “so much confusion and misunderstanding concerning the ’fallen angels’ of which Lucifer is the best-known representative.” [7]
“Anybody’s who’s curious about it, you can go to our website lucistrust.org,” she says in the interview, “and you will find an article explaining the origins of Lucifer and the history of the Lucis Trust. And that should put it to rest.”
Well, I took her up on the challenge. In fact, I did so ten years ago, and I kept the screenshots. However, as of this writing, the screenshots are not necessary, because the Lucis Trust’s explanation of their name continues to be posted as follows, word for word:

“There are comments on the World Wide Web claiming that the Lucis Trust was once called the Lucifer Trust. Such was never the case. However, for a brief period of two or three years in the early 1920’s, when Alice and Foster Bailey were beginning to publish the books published under her name, they named their fledgling publishing company ‘Lucifer Publishing Company’. By 1925 the name was changed to Lucis Publishing Company and has remained so ever since. Both ‘Lucifer’ and ‘Lucis’ come from the same word root, lucis
being the Latin generative case meaning of light. The Baileys› reasons for choosing the original name are not known to us, but we can only surmise that they, like the great teacher H. P. Blavatsky, for whom they had enormous respect, sought to elicit a deeper understanding of the sacrifice made by Lucifer.” [8]
